On 22 March 2021, a massive fire swept through the Kutupalong Balukali refugee camp in Cox’s Bazar, Bangladesh, causing loss of life and immense suffering. Based on provisional reports, 11 refugees have been confirmed as having tragically lost their lives in the fire. More than 500 have been injured and over 300 people are still missing as of 25 March.
UNHCR is rushing to provide critical support and protection to some 45,000 Rohingya refugees who lost their shelters and belongings in the devastating blaze, in support of the ongoing response led by the Bangladeshi authorities and in coordination with other partners as well as refugee volunteers. We are also working to address the critical needs of separated children.
We are urgently appealing for $5.9 million to support critical humanitarian needs in the camps. If you are keen on supporting our efforts, kindly contact partnershipssg@unhcr.org.
